September Block Remix – Maple Leaf block

September 30, 2024March 9, 2025 Post a comment

Hi friends!

I want to share with you my block from our September Block Remix challenge!

September Block

The block we were playing with this month is the Maple Leaf block. A fall classic!

My Remix Fabrics

For my September block, I decided to again play with my Breezy fabrics. I mean, why not? They are perfect for a fall quilt block!

From the line, I used a bunch of the greens and a purple, a red and oranges.

My Remix Block

For my remix, I decided to do a block in a block. I drew lines inside the original block to make a second, smaller leaf block.

Here it is in some batiks.

It’s Ok but I thought it needed more; more something. What that something was…????  I wasn’t sure!

So I played with a few more lines so I could get a little more color into the blocks and use more fabrics.

And then I colored it again, in batiks.

Close but not quite!

Then, after more playing more with the lines and colors, I had 3 blocks. Uh oh.

My September Block

Here is the first block in solids.

And in batiks

and a quilt using the block.

I like it but….

Many of you know I love a good secondary design. I tried something a little crazy to add a secondary design.

This block is fun and the quilt is interesting but…

Not the one. I think the secondary design takes away from the actual block.

Here is the third block.

The secondary design in this one is subtle but adds just a little more interest than the first one but is not as distracting as the second.

I colored the blocks in the center with the pink red fabric and the blocks around the edges has the dark green of the sashing as the accent triangle color. It softens the look while not taking away from the blocks. I am really happy with how it came out.

What do you think? Which of the 3 final blocks is your favorite?

Here is my actual block that I made. Jack (the seam ripper) is in the picture as he and I spent time together while making this block.

Block Patterns

I have been creating block patterns with all my new blocks this year, except for August and September. Due to my busy teaching schedule, I haven’t been able to get them done. But they will be up soon. I am thinking about making a quilt using all my blocks in one fabric line. Hmmm… that could be fun!

Next month is our last block remix of the year. Should be fun!

happy quilting!
