Hi friends!
How are you? We had a cloudy, grey Monday morning here but now it is sunny, 60 degrees…
This past weekend hubby and I finally put together my new ironing board. I love it! Hubby had made a big wood top for my old ironing board and it was great. But… the ironing board itself was a little rickety, so with the big top on it, it was even more rickety!
Time for an Ikea hack!
We found this great kitchen island/cart at Ikea.
Then hubby made the top. He cut some wood to about 24″ x 60″. We could have made it wider but I don’t have the space for that. Next, he made braces on the bottom. The top of the cart sits inside the braces. He used screws so he could remove them.
We then laid out on the floor some white muslin and taped it down (just like getting a quilt ready for quilting!).
Note: yes, iron the fabric first on your old ironing board. We tried to just stretch those wrinkles out- it doesn’t work!
The we laid some batting on top.
Next we laid the new top on top of the fabric and batting, stretched the fabric around the sides, screwed the braces in place over the fabric, trimmed the excess fabric and batting and….
Ta-done!
Today I am going to put some cotton canvas over the top in the middle of the board. I will finish the edges and apply velcro to the fabric and to the braces underneath. We all mostly iron in the same spot and this will allow me to wash the canvas top when it gets a little “over-ironed” but not have to replace the fabric underneath.
Whatcha think of my new ironing board? Not bad!
Onto the Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks vol 14 winners!
Joanna and Ali!
Congratulations!
I have emailed you for your mailing address. Thank you to everyone who commented; I appreciate your taking the time to hop around all the blogs and visit with all of the designers!
happy quilting,

A note about this week: I am spending Thanksgiving with some of my family. I can’t wait! So any orders taken after today will be processed on Tuesday Nov 29th.
I don’t do Black Friday, but Craftsy does and so I will be posting a link later this week to get classes on sale Thursday Nov 24th – Monday Nov 28th. If there are some classes you have been meaning to watch, this is THE sale!
Thank you. I enjoyed the hop and love the magazine. Your big ironing board is neat.
I am about to head on an ‘Ikea Hack’ shopping trip myself… looking for an island cart to build into a cutting table… this one looks perfect!!! Love the step-by-step photos!!
