Block 3: Adventure Quilt Along Project

February 13, 2019December 24, 2019 2 comments

Hi Friends!

Today is the day for Block 3 of the Adventure Quilt Along – a Road Trip Quilt!

Link to download this quilt along block is at the end of the post.

Have you been having fun so far?

I know a few people had some trouble downloading the first 2 blocks, so let’s chat about that. At the end of this post is a box that says to Click Here. Click on that box and it will take you to the page where you can download the block. And yes, you do need to enter your name and email- it is just the way the web site system is set up! We don’t do anything with the information- we just let the system send you the email with the link to the block.

Block 3- Blooms

Block 3 is often called the Buzz Saw block. We called it Blooms. I am sure it has many other names.

Please, post a comment if you do know any other names for this adventure quilt along block! I am curious.

For us, this block reminded us of the sun, when done in all gold, and of the flowers you often see on your travels. Well, if you are traveling by car; maybe not so much when you travel by plane!

When taking a trip, don’t you love seeing how the landscape changes as you travel across state lines and into areas of the country with a slightly different climate? The landscape changes as do the plants and trees. For example, you probably won’t see a palm tree in my home state of Connecticut!

These Blooms blocks represent the sun that (hopefully) shines down on your journey and the flowers and plants you see as you travel on your Road Trip.

Tips for Adventure Quilt Along Block 3

Block 3 is really 3 blocks! All are basically the same but they are made differently.  So the first thing I did when making my blocks was to separate the fabrics for each block into piles.

The first Blooms block is the Sunshine Block. It only uses 2 colors and it starts with making large Half Square Triangles (HST).

Last week, Tammy talked about her favorite method for making HST units and how much she loves her Quilter’s Magic Wand for marking her sewing lines. And I love mine too!

But… these blocks are too big to use that tool. So what is a good way to mark the lines?

I use my long ruler and line up the ¼” line with the diagonal line but note, I then push it slightly off center so that I am marking a scant ¼”.

Now when you are making the blocks oversized, this isn’t as necessary, but if you are cutting to size, a scant ¼” seams works so much better!

Once you have your HST trimmed to size, there are terrific diagrams in the pattern that show you how to cut and sew your block – so just follow them carefully!

The second Blooms block is the Roadside Bloom. Looks like a flower doesn’t it?

This one is made of multiple fabrics and uses a different construction method than the first block. For this block, we will do some stitch and flip.

Mark, stitch and then flip!

I used my regular ruler, or my Quilter’s Magic Wand, to make the diagonal line, sewed on the line, trimmed my ¼” seam and flipped the triangle up. The only trick to this block is making sure you follow the diagrams so you draw your line going in the right direction!

The third block is the Tropical Blooms block. It is smaller and only uses 2 fabrics but it is made the same way as block 2. Easy peasy!

      Susan,
Ok! Good to know. I need one of those big 5500 blocks books so I can see if there are other names!
