A Quilter's Alphabet

A Quilter’s Alphabet: Q for Quilt Sandwich, Quilt Sleeve and Quilting

April 21, 2021April 20, 2021 Post a comment

Hi friends!

This week in the A Quilter’s Alphabet series, Tammy and are up to the letter Q!

Top US quilting blog and shop, Seams Like a Dream Quilt Designs, shares quilt terms quilt sandwich, quilting and more!

For my post, I am chatting about a quilt sandwich, quilt sleeve and quilting!

Quilt Sandwich

A quilt is made up a 3 layers- the top, the inside or batting and the backing.

Put your 3 layers together and now your quilt is just like a sandwich, with bread (fabric) on both side and stuff (batting) in the middle!

Quilting

Once you have your quilt layered into a quilt sandwich, it is time to add the quilting. The quilting are the stitches that hold the 3 layers together.

The stitches are added by hand or by machine. You have so many design possibilities when deciding on thread type, color and pattern of the stitches!

How do you want your stitches to look? Do you want them to blend into the fabrics or stand out? Choices for thread type include cotton thread, polyester thread or invisible thread, just to name a few.

As for quilt designs, the possibilities are almost endless! Stitch in the ditch, follow the lines of the blocks, add an all over design or really go crazy with custom quilting! The decision is up to you, and your checkbook!

Quilt Sleeve

A quilt sleeve is something that can be added to the back of a quilt when it will be hung. If you enter a quilt into a quilt show, you may need to add a sleeve. It is also called a hanging sleeve and we chatted about it in this blog post.

A quilt sleeve is two sided so the hanging pole goes through the sleeve and never touches the back of the sleeve.

Head on over to Tammy’s blog post where she explains quilt as you go, quarter inch foot and quilt math!

Next week in the Exploring Quilting Basics series, Tammy and I will be discussing Star blocks! See you then!

happy quilting!
