In this post I am introducing my newest batik line – Groovy – with Island Batik of Lumin Fabrics that is shipping to stores soon! It’s so exciting!!

Groovy Batiks
This is my 9th batik line with Island Batik!! Can you believe it?
Aren’t these fabrics and colors fun???
Inspiration
It’s always fun to know what inspired a fabric line; this line was inspired by my misspent youth.
OK, OK… I admit, it really wasn’t a misspent youth – I was a boring, follow the rules kind a girl. Well, most of the rules anyway!
But I did break a few fashion rules though they were considered normal breaks in those days! I wore crochet Granny square vest, bell bottoms, I even had a pair of jeans that had one purple leg and one orange leg! Craziness (I admit my grandmother was appalled).
But all those fun fashion items, including fringed vests, peasant blouses, platform sandals (got in real trouble when I wore those for a driving lesson!!), blog colors, bold patterns were fun, a way to make a splash, to stand out, to be unique and find out your own sense of identity.
Groovy is my version of 70’s fashions and style, using icons from the era and a bold color palette that is bright and fun. And at the trade show in May where the line was shown to quilt shops, my daughter and I embraced our inner 70’s fashion!
My Quilts using Groovy
I created 4 new patterns using the Groovy line.

First up is Starbound. this is a remake of a pattern that was in a magazine years ago and while yes, it is a lot of HST units, I think it is smashing! This first version has no borders for a slightly more modern look.
The second quilt uses the print as a border. I had to make the second quilt with the border as that border fabric is one of my favs from the line.
Next is Rotationals!
For this quilt I also made 2 versions – one using the blue side of the line and one using the warm colors.
The warm one was the first one I made. So yummy!
The second version in the cools is just so soothing. I love the subtle gradation of color in these quilts.
Next is UpTick!
I thought it was time for me to do a new braid quilt and this one is so fun. It uses a strip pack (AKA jelly roll) and because the background I used was the same color as one of the strips, when combined, they created these larger sections of color. I scattered them randomly in the quilt.
And last, but not least, is Petal Party!
A small runner pattern whose instructions are on a postcard!!

I’ve just started assembling a collection of batiks and “Groovy” is a gorgeous composition of color & pattern! I particularly like the Up Tick pattern and the idea of using one of the strip color as the background to make sections disappear. Will have to try that on other patterns

At my age I’m finding that I’m doing smaller projects because they’re easier to quilt. I love the Petal Party, it’s a good size. Your new line is very bright and would brighten up a cold dreary winter day.

Beautiful fabric collection! I love the subtle gradation in the Rotational pattern as I’ve been wanting to make a gradation quilt recently. The new braid pattern is wonderful as well.
Wow this line is really pretty and certainly brings back memories of the 70’s. My grandmother too was aghast at my color choices and lack of foundations!

My sister is 12 years older than I, and in the late 60s/early 70s she was VERY groovy, while I was just a pre-K/kindergartener/little kid. I thought my big sister was “it”, with her Mod Squad straight hair and fantastically colorful clothes. I have a very vivid memory of little me, after spending an afternoon watching my sister and her friends laughing and talking and being hip, going to my room and rehearsing their cool lexicon so I could sound like them: “Groovy, groovy, groovy”, very intensely, always the diligent student. So I think I can say from experience, this is a very groovy collection!

I LOVE this line! I was a teen in the ‘60’s, not exactly a flower child but definitely drawn to the bright colors and creative color combos typical of the period. Yoi have captured them beautifully with n this Groovy line. Beautiful and fun!

I love batik fabric. Have been quilting since 2005. Was introduced to this fabric line by a friend a few years back. I don’t make fancy quilts, love scrap quilts. My favorite fabric is Batiks. I never met one I didn’t like! LOL I really like the Starbound, Rotationals, and the Petal Party table runner patterns. Beautiful line and very interesting patterns.
I recently purchased you Sisterhood block of the month pattern. These fabrics will be perfect for this project.
All I can say is—Wow! Amazing colors! I love seeing quilt designs in different colorways. My favorite is Rotationals in the cool colorway.
BTW—I wore bell bottoms to school in the 70s, but both legs were purple. I had an orange and purple striped shirt to match!

I love this new line of fabric. I’m currently participating in a year long batik sewing Bee Hive using all batiks and this bundle would come in extremely handy. Although I don’t think I could part with it so would want to keep everything I made. Poor partner, right?? LOL. Love it!
