Allure BOM Block 5 Tips!

September 11, 2024September 9, 2024 Post a comment

Hi friends!

Welcome back to the ongoing quilt along for the Allure Block of the Month quilt pattern! Are you ready for Block 5?

If you are just finding this post and haven’t been following along, here is a recap!

Allure is a BOM pattern that I designed for the QT fabrics to use with their line called Aura. This line of fabrics is just so lovely; it has great depth of color and movement.

I have a “quilt along” series of blog posts to go along with the pattern. No matter when you start making your quilt, you can reference these posts for tips on making your blocks! The posts will run from April 2024 – December 2024!

If you want to quilt along with me and QT, check with your local quilt shop to see if they are carrying Allure and running a BOM program. If not, you can check with this list of shops and see if they can work with you!

Block 4 Recap

Last month we worked on Block 4. How did you do with it?

It was a lot. There were 2 color ways and 2 blocks sizes and a total of 12 blocks to make!

Not done yet?

No worries. I purposefully scheduled it as block 4 so you had time to chop away at making those blocks as you make all the others.

Allure BOM Block 5 Tips

So what about this month’s block?

This month’s block is a piece of cake!!! Or a collection of HST units!

Block 5 uses 3 main techniques: HST units, stitch ‘n flip to create a square in a square and swirling the seams to get those bulky intersections to lay flat.

Easy peasy!!

But just in case you need a refresher, here is a link to my post on making HST units.

Stitch ‘n Flip Tips

Of the three techniques used in this month’s block, the only one I sometimes have trouble with is stitch ‘n flip. Now there are specialty rulers that one can use to make square in a square units that absolutely help with making these, but if you want to make them without a ruler?

There are also different ways to make the square in a square unit. I chose to do the stitch ‘n flip technique which does have triangle waste but avoids putting the block on the bias.

The thing that usually I have trouble with is when I go to flip my triangle, sometimes it is too big and sometimes it is too small. Does that happen to you? And just like Goldilocks, I am looking for “just right”!

Check out my blog post on stitch ‘n flip where I chat about what might make the piece too big or too small. Usually it is just a case of adjusting where you sew – on the line you drew or next to it!

Another fun tip? It’s about that triangle waste!

If you sew 1/2″ away from your corner to corner line, and then cut in between the 2 sewn lines (red line), you will have a HST unit leftover from each corner and you can save these for another project!

Have fun this month and you will have lots of time to play catch up with Block 4 if you need it. This month’s block won’t take anytime at all!

See you next month for Block 6!!

Happy quilting!

Kate
