My favorite dish is cornbread dressing! The turkey is just an excuse for the dressing. I use the recipe in the Betty Crocker cookbook (I’m at work so don’t have it at hand. I use fresh sage rather than dried.

This is not so much a recipe, as a flavor tip. When making sweet potatoes, add 1/4 cup of 7-Up and 1/4 cup of orange juice to the baking dish before baking. This gives the sweet potatoes a little tanginess… perfect with marshmallows melted on top!

I am a widow and go to a family members house for Thanksgiving dinner. I make a pumpkin coconut pie to bring with me. I would love to win so I could make Toby it and give it to the hostess as a thank you gift. Of course I will make the pie too. All you do is follow the directions on the can of pumpkin pie mix and add coconut to it. Bake it in a deep dish pie crust.

Toby is a cutie! My favorite is the turkey (sorry Toby!). Cajun Fried Turkey. Love it! Here’s the recipe we use, but you can add or remove any ingredient to make it your own: 6 T. salt, 2 T. ground red pepper, 2 T. black pepper, 1 T. white pepper, 1 turkey, approx. 14 lbs., 4 eggs, 1 c. milk, 12 oz. beer (not dark beer), 8 c. all-purpose flour, Peanut Oil for frying (essential that you use peanut oil because it will take the high heat well). Mix seasonings and divide into thirds. 1st third – season turkey outside, under skin and in cavity. Beat eggs, milk and beer & add 2nd third seasonings. Pour over turkey slowly to moisten. Mix flour & remaining third of seasonings. Place in a large shallow pan and dredge turkey well on all sides. Do not attempt to fry the turkey inside. You need a Cajun cooker, which usually includes a device to raise and lower turkey in hot oil. Heat peanut oil to 300 degrees over med. heat. Use EXTREME CAUTION and lower turkey breast down very slowly. Deep fry for 3 minutes per lb., then insert meat thermometer in thigh. It needs to register 180 degrees. Remove from oil and place on a platter lined with paper towels. Enjoy! It also gives a whole new flavor to those left over turkey dishes. Delicious!

Turkey is the best at our house with Sweet Potato Casserole coming in second. As my husband is slicing the turkey, the turkey vultures are lining up looking for samples. To bake the turkey, I first gut it, rub it with olive oil or butter, and then I stuff fresh sage, thyme and rosemary under the skin that I saved from my garden. I make my stuffing with sauteed onions, celery, a stick of butter and fresh sage, parsley and thyme with salt and pepper. I also add some turkey or chicken broth to the vegetable mixture in the skillet to cut down on butter. Then I pour it over my cubed bread ( white & wheat bread is toasted to give it some structure the day before) in a large bowl and toss. I may add 1 egg if it looks like it needs held together after everything is mixed together. Bake in the oven at recommended time printed on the turkey bag. Thanks for the chance to win the gobbler pattern and fabric!

My favorite is cranberry relish. I have had it every Thanksgiving since I was a child. You grind (in meat grinder) fresh cranberries, apples and oranges (with the peelings on). Mix together and add sugar to taste. This is a wonderful tart relish to go with all the “sweetness” of Thanksgiving. I think Toby would be an wonderful addition to my Thanksgiving celebration each year.

Turkey has to have the DRESSING, good yellow cornbread crumbled up, sauteed onions and celery, along with chicken broth, sage, and poultry seasoning. Just made some this week to have with a roasted chicken. Better add the gravy! Anything else on the menu is gravy! Toby would look great hanging from my wall near our stairs.

We always have Finish Turnip. 1 large turnip or rutabaga peeled and boiled until soft.
Beat well adding 1/4 cup butter, 1/2 cup brow n sugar, 1 cup lt cream, 1 cup cornflake crumbs, 1 egg slightly beaten. Put in casserole dish and sprinkle some cornflake crumbs on top. bake 30 minutes at 350 if baking right after making. Can be made day before without baking. I always bake 45 minutes or until heated through. It depends on how much you make and how deep the dish is…

I like the turkey best. I roast it in an open roaster. I set the oven on 500 degrees. While the oven is heating I rub the turkey with EVOO. Then I stuff the cavity with fresh herbs ( sage rosemary, and thyme) I also put in a few small carrots, a couple of cut up celery stalks, a whole onion cut up in wedges and 2 or 3 cloves of garlic. I roast the turkey at the high temperature for 20 minutes then turn it down to 325 degrees. and cook about 12 or 15 minutes a pound until done. DO NOT COVER! BASTE ABOUT EVERY 20 MINUTES TO HALF HOUR. It turns out very moist and tasty. Be sure to include the 20 minutes at the high temperature in your time calculations.

I liked you on Facebook and looking forward to following your page. My must dish for Thanksgiving? Holiday Mashed Potatoes! Mashed potatoes all dressed up with sour cream, cream cheese, eggs, milk, salt, refrigerated overnight and baked for 45 minutes. They getting puffy and are delicious but only once or twice a year. I believe it came originally from an old Marjorie Standish cookbook, a New England cook.

Toby is adorable! I love to make Scalloped corn for Thanksgiving. One can of cream corn, one can regular corn(drained), 1 egg(beaten), 1/2 cup milk, 3/4 cup flour, salt and pepper to taste. Mix all ingredients, pour into buttered baking dish, bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until knife comes out clean from center. One of my favorite dishes!

Love your Toby the Turkey – so cute!! Out Thanksgiving would not be complete without my Mom’s string beans. She is no longer with us here but in our hearts.
    Recipe
Two 10 oz cans french cut string beans
    Two pkgs slivered almonds
One bottle Wishbone Italian dressing (or Zesty if you like things spicier)
    butter

Open string beans and drain thoroughly, place in microwaveable casserole
Pour dressing over string beans and toss to coat
Refrigerate until nearly time to eat.
Just before serving, melt butter in frying pan and brown the slivered almonds
While doing this, heat the string beans in the microwave for about 5 minutes or so on high
top with browned almonds and serve!
    Thanks, Mom!

My favorite dish is the stuffing. I just melt a stick of butter in a large skillet, sauté onions and celery, add a couple of cups of chicken stock, maybe some good sausage and onions. Pour all of this over a big bowl of herbed bread stuffing then put it all in a buttered casserole. Cover with foil and bake for about 45 minutes. Take the foil off and bake another 10-15 minutes. Best stuffing ever! It’s simple, but oh so good. It enhances a good turkey dinner and is best with a little turkey gravy poured over it. I’m salivating just thinking about it!

I love that little turkey and would love to make him! He is such a little cutie and I know exactly where I would proudly hang him!!! Here is my recipe:
    BACON GREEN BEANS
Boil green beans until crisp tender. Drain, reserving some of the water. Chop 8 slices of bacon into small pieces and fry til crisp. Remove the bacon and add about 3 T. flour to the drippings. Stir until flour is slightly brown. Add a few tablespoons of the reserved water to make a crumbly paste. Add the cooked beans. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Stir and enjoy!
