Today in the A Quilter’s Alphabet series, Tammy and I are exploring terms that start with the letter L. I will discuss layer cake and length of fabric.
Layer Cake
A layer cake is a name for a stack a curated 10″ squares. Just like the term “jelly roll” was coined by Moda, so is “Layer Cake”. Usually there are 42 squares in a layer cake, with all the fabrics from one collection.
But, other companies have put together packs of 10″ squares as well- called stack, packs…. you get the idea!
Length of Fabric (LOF)
Length of fabric often refers to a couple of things. It refers sometimes to the grain of the fabric and the lengthwise grain runs parallel to the selvedge.
It also refers to the amount of fabric- the length of fabric is the amount of yardage you have. For example, if you buy 1 yard of fabric that is 40″ wide, the width of the fabric is 40″ and the length is 36″ (1 yard).
