Hi friends!
It’s time for the April quilt block remix sneak peek #1!
The April Block
This month we are remixing the Flower Basket quilt block.
And in the last post, I shared the fabrics I am using. Click here to see those pretty batiks!
April Remix Sneak Peek #1
I wanted to remix the block in a way that preserved the flower part- the HST units. The basket part I also wanted to keep but I didn’t want it to feel like a basket.
Hmmmm..
Ok- here is my first pass at remixing the blocks using the original colors of the block.
The browns of the basket became part of the HST units. A good first try!
This is what the quilt would look like.
Not a bad remix. But then I wondered how it would look in the batiks.
It looks OK but there is not enough contrast between a couple of the fabrics. So here is the dilemma – do I switch up the design or chose different fabrics?
Picking Fabrics for a Quilt
This is actually a great lesson in choosing fabrics for a quilt. Because, since I am in the design stage for the block, I have the flexibility to create the block to work with the fabrics I have already chosen. But when choosing fabrics for a quilt that is already designed, sometimes we need to be flexible.
See how these 2 fabrics don’t really have enough contrast?
I could move things around, try the leaf print in another spot… I could pick another orange fabric but I think that would mean too much orange. Hmmm… what to do!
Ever go fabric shopping and choose a fabric that you JUST LOVE and while it appears that it should look great, you just can’t make it work in a pattern? That has happened to me. I really want to use a certain fabric but because of color, value or the scale of the print, it just won’t work. Ugh.
But that’s OK- if you really like it, use it to pick the other fabrics and then maybe it becomes a border, or it becomes the backing because you used it to pick all the other fabrics.
Next week I will share more on the process of remixing this block. In the meantime…
happy quilting!!
