Hi friends!
Hard to believe but it’s time for the June Quilt Block Remix Reveal!
June Quilt Block Remix
To recap, we started with the Monkey Wrench block. It has a few other names as well.
My Plan
For my remix of the block, I wanted to focus on the center of the block and see what I could do with that.
You can read more about it in my first June Block post here.
My New Remixed Block!
After a few variations, here is the block I ended up with!
As you can see, I tried to keep the center of the block and add the whirling effect but by using rectangles. The block has more of a diagonal feel to the lines but because of the 2 green rectangles going in the opposite diagonal, when you put blocks together, you get a nice whirling look to the quilt.
More Quilt Variations
Recently I spoke to my local quilt guild about the block remixes and they requested a class on how to remix a block. Part of the lecture, my Modern Traditional lecture, was how to make a quilt feel more modern when it starts as traditional.
One way is to keep the borders, but play with the colors.
By repeating the background as the borders, the center of the quilt seems to float. I always like this look.
Another border variation (that has nothing to do with making it more modern or more traditional!) is to use 3 colors.
In this quilt, repeating the sashing as the first border creates a stop to the center of the quilt. Adding a thin background border gives a nice contrast and allows a little breathing room between the inner and outer border. It really helps the third border to shine but the borders don’t detract from the inside of the quilt!
So tell me, do you like quilts with borders? Without borders? Or both depending on the quilt?
I hope you enjoyed my June quilt block remix! I had so much fun with it!
