Hi friends!
Life is super hectic and busy these days but I did want to share this month’s block remix and show how I have started on The Flag block!
The Flag Block
This month we are remixing and remaking this easy flag block.
The block is so recognizable and has a very simple structure. What to do?
The Process
It provides a great time to chat about how to approach starting a block remix! This past weekend I taught a class for my local quilt guild on remixing quilt blocks and I how you might approach the process.
One thing was chatted about was deciding on whether you want to maintain the integrity or the original structure of the block. For this flag block, I do want to keep to the basic structure and just add some details and maybe texture.
Maybe I might even change the shape? I could make it a rectangle, more similar to a real flag. Decisions!
The Flag Block Fabrics
I chose to keep to the basic color scheme and grabbed strips and scraps from my stash. Blue, reds and a bunch of whites.
First Draft
Here is the first draft of the new block from EQ8.
I kept to the same size and added a star to the blue area. Just one for drama.
And then I thought about making the red stripes into HST units. I would use reds that are close in value to each other. That way it would add texture but not too much contrast. So the star would still be the hero!
What do you think? Do you like it? What else should I do?
I’ll post an update on IG/FB next week and the block reveal here (and on IG/FB) May 27th. Which is Memorial Day and that seems like a perfect day to reveal a flag block remix!
Tell me, how would you remix this block?
happy quilting!
Kate
