Hi friends!
Today I want to introduce you to a friend of mine and an amazing pattern designer, Kris Poor of Poorhouse Quilt Designs!
Pattern Designer Kris Poor
Now for some of you, she needs no introduction. She is very well known in the quilt world for creative designs and especially for her Fold ‘n Stitch wreath!
She and I decided to ask each other a few interview questions and her answers are below.
What did you do before you were a pattern designer?
Before becoming a pattern designer, I was a manufacturing engineer; I have always loved putting things together! This involved writing processes, specifying tools, as well as working with suppliers and customers. Funny thing is – these are the same skills that I use every day in my pattern design business!
What is your favorite type of quilt to make? Favorite techniques?
I currently enjoy making scrap quilts to bust my stash. Favorite techniques? That changes all of the time! Right now I love freezer paper piecing which allows me to add difficult to piece shapes into my quilts.
Any other hobbies?
What other hobbies? Lol! I do enjoy hiking and watercolor painting, but quilting will always be my favorite!
How do you choose your colors?
I generally start with one color I’d like to use and then start to look for related color palettes on sites like Pinterest. I also find inspiration in other places: on hikes, in wallpapers, in museums – I try to keep my eyes open and my phone ready to click on that inspiration!
How did you get started as a pattern designer?
After having children, I realized that I wanted to work at a job that allowed me to stay closer to home. I decided that I could start with teaching at local quilt shops (I am lucky to live in an area with loads of shops). Then the shops asked what will you teach? I decided to teach a tote that I had designed and just like that, a pattern company was born.
How many sewing machines do you have? Lol
Too many to count! A machine I just added a long arm to my menagerie! I have had so much fun playing with my new toy! I have so much to learn!
Best tip?
Test test test! Be curious, whether you are testing with a new material (for example a new interfacing) or a new block. If you stay curious, you can make mistakes (I make loads of them!) Mistakes mean that you are really learning!
Wasn’t if fun to learn more about Kris?
If you know her creative 3-dimensional designs like her wreath and her ornaments, it makes sense she was an engineer in a past life!
