Patchwork Braids – Braids with varying strip sizes!

April 9, 2025April 15, 2025 162 comments

Hi friends!

This week I am sharing images of the projects in my new book Patchwork Braids that use strips of varying sizes!! And I have a giveaway of the most gorgeous panel!!!

Keep reading to see how to enter!

I love these options for braids and they can look so different!

Sapphire Tote

In the Sapphire Tote bag I added these skinny little strips of coral linen to make the whole braid pop!  The other braids pieces were not paired by color; they were just mix and match of these fun plaids from Robert Kaufman!

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her book Patchwork Braids & how to use strips of various sizes! Image is a quilted tote bag in deep blue linen with accent strips of braids in pastel plaid fabrics.

Clementine Quilt

In the Clementine quilt, I used 4 different sizes of strips to cut my braid pieces and, I used the skinny strips to go in between all the other sizes. And each size was added as a pair of the same fabric.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her book Patchwork Braids & how to use strips of various sizes! Image is a star quilt in purple and oranges with green braids.

All the fabrics in the quilt were from my Breezy batik line.

The Varying Size Tip!

How do you work with braids pieces cut from strips of varying sizes?

It’s easy – just add the braids in pairs of the same size!

Blue Dahlia Quilt

And in the Blue Dahlia quilt, I just used braids in a variety of sizes. Don’t you just love this panel (from the Fanciful Fronds collection from Timeless Treasures)?? The design of the panel really is so amazing.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her book Patchwork Braids & how to use strips of various sizes! Image is a quilt made using braids and a fabric panel of a dahlia in purple and aqua, pink and yellow.

The braid accent border frames the panel nicely and, by not adding them all around the quilt, they don’t take over or distract from the main event- which is the panel, of course!

Patchwork Braids – Giveaway time!

Would you like a chance to win a panel so you can make your own Blue Dahlia quilt?

I have another version of the panel, in deep, rich blues, aqua and purples. It is just stunning.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her book Patchwork Braids & how to use strips of various sizes! Image is of a fabric panel of a dahlia in deep blue, purple and aqua.

Isn’t it gorgeous??? Up close, it almost looks 3d. The panel is about 36″ x 44″.

I would love to keep it but I decided to share!

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her book Patchwork Braids & how to use strips of various sizes! Image is a closeup of a fabric panel of a dahlia in deep blue, purple and aqua.

To be entered for a chance to win the panel, just leave a comment on this blog post. Entries will close Monday April 14th at 9pm ET.

Giveaway is closed! Thanks to all who commented! Winner has been emailed.

Good luck!

happy quilting!

Kate

Kate, I don’t know how you do it but you have a knack for finding and making the most beautiful pieces. The best part is that they look involved and difficult but they are not. Even a beginner can achieve fabulous results. Your color skills are amazing and the best part is that you share your ideas and provide assistance. Your instructions are very organized and easy to follow. I appreciate being included in your newsletters and offers.

The Penelope is beautiful. The quilt with the panel is gorgeous. 🩷 I love the braids as well. I remember meeting you through the Woodland Park – Quilters Above the Couds. The first time you spoke at our meeting I won one of the yellow rulers for paper piecing. The send time following the class we went to lunch. I hope all is well in Connecticut.

    Hi
Yes, I have your book…. I wanted to get started on a baby blanket ASAP, so I got the book on my Kindle. That is not something I would do again, (quilt book on a Kindle). As I was happily going along, I was informed that pink was not a color the mom of the baby liked. So, there it sits unfinished.
I have to say, there are so many exciting ideas in the book, I am thinking a table runner, for me….
I love to free motion and the panel you showed is beautiful.
I saw you on the Quilt show, I was intrigued right away.
One thing I did learn, if you put the Kindle app on an ipad, then the pictures are in color.

The panel is stunning, absolutely amazing. I never would have thought to put braid as a border. I’m going to put that idea away in brain and hope when I need it I’ll be able to find it, 😂
