May Island Batik Challenge- part 1

May 31, 2017July 16, 2020 Post a comment

Hi friends!

Talk about last minute! Hard to believe today is the last day of May. The Island Batik ambassador challenge this month was  to make a modern quilt.

May challenge

This brings up a common question: what is modern? Ask a few different modern quitters and you may get some different answers. To me, modern is a break from some traditional quilting rules- you don’t have to have borders, you don’t have to have blocks all the same size in rows, you can play and experiment.

According to the Modern Quilt Guild, modern quilting incorporates the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work.

So, how can I take what I do- which to the traditional quilter is NOT traditional and to the modern quilter is NOT modern – and make a modern quilt?

Ah, there is also the idea of Modern Traditionalism-which someone at Quilt Market called fusion.

That sounds like something I could do!

I decided to start with this strip pack that was in my box along with these 2 coordinating fabrics.

I do love a precut!

I sewed the long precut strips together into strip sets of 4 and 3. Then I cross cut them, sewed them back together into long sections, cut the background fabric into various widths and sewed them all together.

The top is done, the binding is ready to go but I really need to press it and then quilt it… but I like it.

I am going to quilt it using this awesome purple thread from Aurfil.

When I first pulled it out, I thought it might be too dark. But once I unwound a bit and laid it out on the quilt, I realized it would be just perfect!

Once the quilting and binding are done, I will post part 2 so you can see the whole quilt.

happy quilting,

Kate
