Today I am going to share about quilt sashing, setting types, setting squares and quilt stash. Quilt stash- you don’t have one of those, do you???

Quilt Sashing

When one chats about quilt sashing, you need to include sashing and sashing squares.

Sashing refers to strips of fabric, usually skinny strips but not always!- that are used to separate blocks in rows and in between rows.

Look at my quilt Gardenesque from my book Smash Your Precut Stash.

The flower blocks are separated from each other with skinny strips of background fabric.

Sashing squares, also known as cornerstones, are used to break up the sashing strips in a design. They can be a solid piece of fabric, a small pieced block or even and appliqué block. They can really help to set off blocks are add their own design element.

In Gardenesque, you can see that the sashing squares are set to show off groups of 4 flower blocks.

Quilt Settings

A quilt setting refers to the way blocks are arranged in a quilt design. There are many different quilt settings.

One common and easy setting is to arrange the blocks in straight horizontal rows like the blocks in my quilt Urban Twist.

Or the blocks could be set on point- which means the blocks are arranged in diagonal rows, like my quilt Tropical Sky. These settings look great for many blocks but require you to know how to calculate the sizes for setting triangles and corner triangles!

Another setting option is the free form or alternate grid layout where the blocks are not set in rows but scattered about the quilt, like in our quilt Luminous! The blocks in this quilt are turned on point, but not set in straight rows!

Quilt Stash

A quilt stash is the term used to describe a fabric collection. It may include fabric purchased for a project, leftover fabrics from other projects and impulse fabric purchases!

Have you set up a good storage system? Do you have a room just for your quilting or do you still dream about having one- a room dedicated to all things quilting? I recently was asked to contribute to an article on How to Create the Ultimate Quilting Room on Redfin and there are some great suggestions from many different quilters!

From Redfin:

For the experienced quilt maker, having a dedicated space in your home to sew can foster creativity and provide uninterrupted concentration. While having a large space comes in handy, any small area in your home that can accommodate fabric storage, machinery, craft tables, and working space is all you need.

If you are looking to create a quilting room in your home, look no further. Redfin reached out to quilting experts from Vancouver, BC to Miami, FL, including myself, to get our best tips on creating the ultimate quilting room. Click here to see what we had to say.

I love chatting about our quilt stashes in my lecture, How to Smash Your Stash. I chat about how to sort, store and use that stash! Click here for more information.

NOW! Be sure to click here to head on over to Tammy’s post where she shares about more S quilting terms!

Next week in our Exploring Quilting Basics series, Tammy and I are sharing about how to hang a quilt. See you back here then!

happy quilting!
