Hi friends!
Welcome back to the Allure quilt block blog series!
Try saying that 5 times fast!!!
Allure is a BOM pattern that I designed for the QT fabrics to use with their line called Aura. This line of fabrics is just so lovely; it has great depth of color and movement.
I am creating a “quilt along” series of blog posts to go along with the pattern. No matter when you start making your quilt, you can reference these posts for tips on making your blocks! The posts will run from April 2024 – January 2025!
If you want to quilt along with me and QT, check with your local quilt shop to see if they are carrying Allure and running a BOM program.
Allure BOM Block 7
This month you will be making just 1 block.
And Block 7 uses some of the same unit we have used before- primarily HST units and FG units.
Let’s explore some of the units.
Flying Geese and HST Units
Back in Block 3, we explored 2 different ways to make the FG units. For this block, since we need 4 of the same FG unit, we can use the 4 at once method.
That’s my favorite method to make FG units!
What’s yours?
Putting Block 7 Together
For the block, we use the HST units make corner units where we will swirl the seams and center units made up of the FG units and a rectangle.
My units are laid out on my homemade design board. Click here to read more about how to make one for yourself!
Center Unit
Is there another way to make the center unit?
Of course! One way would be to cut a large square of fabric G and stitch and flip 2 fabric B squares in the corner. This way has 1 less seam but more waste; you know all those pesky triangle that you trimmed off after you stitched and flipped! Of course, if you like to make things with all those leftover bits, you may prefer this method.
Is one better than another? Not really; I believe it is just personal preference. And I prefer less waste and, as I mentioned before, I like making FG units!
Corner Units
I love swirling the center seams when press after I sew 4 units/squares together. I find my blocks lay flatter. Though I know not everyone feels comfortable doing that. You can always just press the to row to one side and the bottom row in the other direction so the center seams next together.
Remember, it is your quilt; press the way that works for you!
Favorite Tools
Speaking of pressing, here are 2 of my favorite tools that also help my blocks to lay flatter. One is my wool pressing mat; the other is my clapper.
I am not a big fan of pressing sprays though if they work for you, use them! I prefer to press without steam and then slap the wooden clapper on top of the seam and hold it there for a few seconds. It holds in the heat and helps to set the seam flat.
Why is my seam ripper in the picture? Jack think he is my favorite tool because I use him so often!
Have fun making Block 7 and I will see you back here next month for Block 8!! Only 2 more blocks to go!
Happy quilting!
Kate
Please Note: All the sizes need for Block 7 are in the pattern. I am not sharing block or cutting sizes on the blog; you will need the pattern to make the quilt.
Fabrics are from the Aura fabric line from QT Fabrics!
