Hi friends!
Happy New Year!
What are you up to today? I am allowing myself to do a little sewing that is just for me. Right now I have some pretty big deadlines coming up (fun stuff that I can’t share yet…) but I also know it is important to allow time for fun. Even if it is just 15 minutes of making a few improv blocks!
Project Quilting Mystery QAL
Project Quilting is running her 6th free Mystery QAL this week. It started Dec 26th and runs through Jan 6th. For this mystery, we are making little improv blocks to make a small, 24″ quilt. You only need 2 fabrics ( though I am using 3) and the blocks are fast and fun to make! I didn’t start on day 1 but was able to catch up quickly.
Here are some of my blocks…

Improv Blocks
One of the things doing this reminded me is that I love making improv blocks! Such easy piecing – you just take your scraps and whip up a few blocks.
I find it fun not to have to worry about whether I cut the pieces the correct size, does that pattern tell the right number of squares to make all the HST units, did I hit the point on that FG unit? And while I love making patterns, matching points and seams and seeing a quilt design come to life, I also enjoy the freedom of making improv blocks where there is not a plan other than to just sew blocks.
I just sewed leftover strips together and made a drawstring bag!
Here’s one I did for a blog post on crumb quilting.
I also made improv blocks and used them to make a couple of these storage pods.
Using up my scraps and making blocks where I don’t have to worry about lining things up can be sew fun!
Are you a fan of improv blocks?
Project Quilting Season 15
This season for Project Quilting, I am a sponsor! I donated some fabrics for her to give away. If you don’t know about Project Quilting, click here to check it out. It’s a free online quilt challenge.
Basically a challenge is posted on Sunday and you have a week to create your quilt! If you post a picture of your quilt in the right place, then you are entered for a chance to win that week’s random weekly drawing.
But her post gives all the details so go read all about it!
January Block Remix
The Block Remix Challenge on Instagram starts on Monday! The plan is to post each week a sneak peek of my remix of the January block.
I think we have 11 designers doing the Remix challenge this month! It will be so fun to see what everyone creates!!
I can’ promise to also do a blog post each week but I will do a post at the end of the month to show the block and what I did to remake it!
happy quilting and a very Happy New Year to all!
