Hi friends! Are you ready for the January Quilt Block Remix challenge reveal?
The January Block
This month, we were working on the block called Alabama Variation.
The first week I shared the original block and my fabric choices for my remix. You can see that post here.
The next 2 weeks, I shared some of my edits of the block. Posts for the 2 sneak peeks are here and here in case you missed them!
My Process
Last week I had a great block remix.
I really liked where I was heading but I wanted to play some more. I think playing in EQ (Electric Quilt) is so much fun! Do you EQ? I love how I can make a change, see how it looks, undo or do more with the just a few clicks of the mouse.
The center of this block is so fun and funky but I wanted to see what else could happen. So more clicks of the mouse, more lines drawn…. more HSTs made….
January Quilt Block Remix Reveal
And Ta-da! Here is my finished remixed block!
I ended up really changing things – and while I really like last week’s block, this one is really fun too. Just a very different vibe.
The Quilt
Doesn’t the final block look great when the blocks come together in a quilt setting? Just a few changes and it really looks different.
One thing I really like is that it looks like I took blocks and added sashing and pieced cornerstones.
But I didn’t! Because the outside of the block is the white and has small HSTs in the corners, it creates that secondary pattern.
And here is the quilt when the blocks get turned. More of a pinwheel.
And another option – the blocks form a V or zigzag. And I’m sure I could come up with other options!
Does my block have a name? Sure it does! I am naming my blocks this year based on streets I have lived on! So this block’s name is Newcastle.
Newcastle PDF Block Pattern
I have also created a pattern for the block! One thing I want to do this year is to create a PDF block pattern each month that you can purchase so you can make your own remixed block. I might even try to work on some of the older block that I remixed as I have requests for them; they are on the list.
The pattern is just for a block and it is only available as a PDF downloadable pattern. But you can purchase it here on my website or, if you are international, it is also in my ETSY shop.
Next month we will be remixing another quilt block so see ya soon for more quilt block fun!
happy quilting!
Kate
p.s. Did you see I am teaching on a second quilting cruise? This one is in February of 2025!!!
