My new batik line- Meet Winged Things! FQ giveaway too!

February 7, 2024February 15, 2024 282 comments

Hi friends!

I am so excited to show you my new batik line with Island Batik called Winged Things!!!

The Inspiration

One of my favorite places to wander is the Denver Botanic Garden. I love it in winter, in spring, summer and fall!

I often get inspiration from there. The inspiration for this line was spring at the garden… the bees buzzing, the butterflies flitting about and the soft pastels of the spring flowers.

The fabrics of Winged Things

For my fabrics, I chose a limited color palette- soft yellow, oranges, and purples.

I love how this came out – it feels so soft and a little bold all at the same time!

The quilts in Winged Things

I made quite a few quilts using the line. Here is a quick line up of the quilts!

Chopped

Chopped is a strip pack friendly quilt pattern.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her new batik fabric line Winged Things and a FQ giveaway! Image is a pieced quilt in orange, purple, yellow and white batiks.

There are 2 sizes – this version is the lap.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her new batik fabric line Winged Things and a FQ giveaway! Image is closeup of the quilting of a bee in variegated thread on yellow, white, purple and orange batiks.

Both use just one strip pack but the larger bed quilt also adds a background to stretch the blocks to a bigger quilt!

I love the quilting we did on this one!

Lark

Lark is named after my cute kitty and it features appliquéd butterflies.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her new batik fabric line Winged Things and a FQ giveaway! Image is an appliquéd butterfly quilt in purple, orange and yellow batiks.

I figured since the line had butterflies, I needed to make a quilt with them too.

And we quilted it with butterflies!

Soar in Winged Things

Soar is a unique BOM quilt pattern that incorporates traditional blocks in a more modern setting.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her new batik fabric line Winged Things and a FQ giveaway! Image is a block of the month star quilt with a white background and purple, orange yellow and white batiks.

For fun, we made it in a light and a dark background!

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her new batik fabric line Winged Things and a FQ giveaway! Image is a block of the month star quilt with a dark purple background and purple, orange yellow and white batiks.

I called the light background Daybreak and the dark, Nightfall.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her new batik fabric line Winged Things and a FQ giveaway! Image is a quilt - a large star in the center in purple, oranges and yellow batiks.

So fun how all the blocks work together in this quilt. I know there are a few shops we are doing this as a BOM. It should be fun!

Sparks

And last, but not least, Sparks!

Sparks is the quilt I am teaching next month on the cruise with Stitchin Heaven.

Should be a fun time!!

The FQ Giveaway!

Time for a giveaway! I have 2 FQ bundles to give away.

Top US quilting blog and shop, Kate Colleran Designs, shares about her new batik fabric line Winged Things and a FQ giveaway! Image is a stack of orange, yellow, white and purple batik fat quarters.

The first FQ bundle is all 20 fabrics in the line.

The second is a curated group of 10 of the prints.

Giveaway is closed! Thanks to all who entered!!

To be entered for a chance to win one of these FQ bundles LEAVE A COMMENT ON THIS BLOG POST.

I like making lap size quilts. They are just the right size to give to someone going through a tough time in their life. Your colors are beautiful! Just in time for Spring! Butterflies are one of my favorite things that I enjoy watching!

I have gravitated towards smaller works lately, like wall hangings or table runners. I love using beautiful batik fabrics and have used a lot of blues, I would like to work with some beautiful batiks like yours, with different colors and designs. They are so happy!

Love the colors and working with batiks are my favorite. The soar quilt is lovely and would be so fun to make with this line. I tend to use partof a pattern and then adapt to something I can make in a weekend if possible for most projects. So table runners and smaller quilts but I also like to deep dive on bigger ones and change up the math to create a challenge and unique sizes.

As to my favorite size quilts to make? I make them all, but as tend to make more queen and king size quilts In guess I should say those are my favorite sizes. It really depends on who I am making a quilt for and what the need is, as well as design and fabrics. For your yummy and cheerful bundle of fabrics I would love to selfishly make a king for our master bedroom. Again it is just such a cheerful collection why not wake up happy with it?

Thank you for the chance to enter your giveaway!! Lap size quilts are my favorite go to and I make them completely by hand, no sewing machine used at all. I have done all my quilts this way for over 20 years and I really love making my quilts totally by hand. I may love lap size quilts the most, but I’m currently working on 4 full size and 1 king size. Again, thank you for the chance. I really love the colors of the new batik line.

I just love this new line, it screams spring for sure along with Easter decor, I am trying to focus more on wall hangings and table toppers this year, For a change of pace as well as wanting to play catch up on quilting some of quilt tops, I just love the butterfly fabric and how you put them into a quilt, I would love to try my hand at using the fabrics to make a wall hanging, and matching table topper,
You always design bright and cheery colors,

The colors in your new fabric line are beautiful and definitely play well together as is seen in all the different quilts you made with the line. I prefer to make either lap size or crib size quilts. I have made larger quilts, but I prefer to see a finished quilt top faster. The smaller size lends itself to that goal.

Love the fabrics in this line. I even picked out a pattern that I’ll use when incorporating these fabrics!

So excited as I just received a call that my first quilt is finished and ready to be picked up at the longarm shop. The top has been done for about 10 years, but I needed encouragement and instructions on what to do next. I was at the point of getting rid of all my quilting fabrics, tools, accessories and a nice machine when a long time friend showed me next steps and got me going in the right direction. So glad we had time together as she renewed my excitement for quilting. The best part is knowing that when I pick up the first quilt, I’ll be dropping off my second one to be completed.

I used to love making bed quilts but because I’m working on quilting my own quilts at home and have run out of people to give those to….now lap quilts are my favorite size. Everyone seems to need and love those and they are fun to share .. They are easier to finish timewise and my hope is they will be my opportunity to donate for charity quilts!
