Hi friends!
It’s the last post in the Allure BOM QAL and today we are chatting about Tips for Block 9 and the Setting!!
The Quilt
In case this is your first time seeing the posts, Allure is a BOM pattern that I designed for the QT fabrics to use with their line called Aura. This block of the month quilt is a modern take on a row quilt!
I have created a “quilt along” series of blog posts to go along with the pattern. No matter when you start making your quilt, you can reference these posts for tips on making your blocks! The posts started in April 2024 until this one in January 2025! Links to all the earlier blog posts are at the end of this post.
Tips for Block 9
Let’s start with some tips for Block 9.
This block uses all units we have done before; HST units, FG units and square in a square. And when the FG units match up with the center square in a square, they form the strong center diamond shape.
Let’s look at the way the block goes together.
That was easy, right?
Do you need a refresher on sewing any of the units? Click here for a blog post on HST units and here for one on FG units. And here is a link for square in a square.
The setting
Now let’s look at the setting. We first have to make some FG units using the background fabric and 3 of the block fabrics.
Once we have those, the blocks are sewn in 3 sections.
The Top and Bottom Sections
The top and bottom section are essentially the same just the reverse of each other using different blocks and different FG units.
The sewing is fairly straight forward until you get to one spot when you need to do a partial seam!
Have you done one before? They are not hard.
You can see that we need to sew pieces together that are not the same size. Partial seams let us do that with less cutting and piecing. I have a blog post on Partial Seams that can give you some guidance. But the pattern shows how to do it so you should be just fine!
A partial seam construction saves you eventually piecing together smaller pieces, usually of the same fabric. It gives it a more seamless look and can be a great quilting tool for you to know!
Now, it still happens in this quilt that we have to sew 2 pieces of the same fabric together, but it would have happened more without the partial seams!
The Center Section
The center section is easy; just blocks in a row!
Add some sashing above and below and you are almost done!
The Quilt
Sew them all together, add a border and boom!!
You are already to quilt and bind and Ta-done! I hope you LOVE your Allure quilt; I know I love mine.
Happy quilting!
Kate
Please Note: All the sizes need for Block 9 and the setting are in the pattern. I am not sharing block or cutting sizes on the blog; you will need the pattern to make the quilt.
Fabrics are from the Aura fabric line from QT Fabrics!
