Hi friends!
A quilt remake- what exactly do I mean with this? Well, I often get to play, usually digitally, with fabrics from another company. They ask designers to see if we can recolor a quilt pattern of ours using their fabrics.
It’s sometimes fun to see how different a quilt can look with a new fabric line!
This post is about a quilt remake I did for my quilt pattern Gemstone.
Gemstone – the original
Gemstone is a quilt I originally made using a line of batiks from Island Batik. the line was bright and bold; it was called contemporary. It came out a few years ago. This is a quilt that I often teach at guilds.
People often look at it and say, well, quilters won’t make that because they find diamonds too hard.
Funny since it is not made up of diamonds. It is made up of half rectangle triangles sewn together to look like diamonds.
The Fabrics
For the quilt remake of Gemstone, I used a like of fabrics called Blissful Blooms. The line is an Ink & Arrow for QT Fabrics collection by Cynthia Frenette – shipping in January 2026 to shops.
The fabrics are a great combination of florals and washed abstracts with little prints in a bold palette of soft yellows, greys, white and black. It was fun to color the quilt picking the combination of prints that I thought worked out.
Then they asked me to actually make the quilt!! How fun is that!
Gemstone – the quilt remake!
Here is my finished quilt. I was trying to hold it up in the backyard while hubby took a picture but to be honest, I was not quite tall enough or my arms just weren’t long enough!!!
Here is the quilt draped on the railing of our little front porch.
If you are an eagle eye, you might notice I used the exact same quilting design on this quilt as I did on the original.
I debated looking for a floral quilting design to match the flowers in some of the prints but really, Gemstone is a bold, more modern design and it deserves a more bold modern quilting design to complement it. And I love that the quilt looks so good in fabrics that are a mix of the traditional floral and the modern abstract. Kind of fits my vibe doesn’t it? Modern Traditional. A little bit of this, a little bit of that!
Next week I will share some tips on making Gemstone!
happy quilting!
