Hi friends,
It’s time for our last block in the Jingle Bell Pines Block Party- Block 9 Holiday Lights.
If you are new to the party, Kris Poor and I have been sharing tips about the blocks in our new block of the month quilt pattern Jingle Bell Pines! Click here to see the introduction post.
Block 9 Holiday Lights
Piecing Tips
This unit can be tricky to sew so let’s chat about your options. First, what unit? Our candle flame!
It is another of those units with multiple names- Peaky and Spike, triangle in a square, V-block, 2 peaks in 1, rectangle triangles….
And just like there are many names, there are many ways to piece this! For this pattern, we chose not to use a way that required a special ruler or paper piecing. But you may find that paper piecing or using a specialty ruler like the Tri Recs makes it easier.
For the traditional method we chose, let’s review the steps.
First, you will cut the triangles.
If you lay both the side triangles on either side of the block before sewing, the side triangles seem really long!
Offset the side triangles down 1/8″ at the top when laying the side triangle on the center triangle to sew the side seams. Offsetting the seams helps to ensure that you will get that perfect point!
Do it on both sides.
When you go to trim the block, there should be 1/4″ at the top and the lower points won’t look like points yet, they should be 1/8″ in form the side. This ensures when you sewn the unit into the block you will get those points!
Other Colorations
Block 9 Holiday Lights looks great with both of our other backgrounds. Here it is with the khaki.
And with the navy.
Be sure to check out Kris’ posts – I think she has a lot of helpful images for you.
Have fun and next week we will work on the setting and setting blocks! Our quilt is almost done!
happy quilting,
Kate
Please note: we are not sharing any cutting information or sizes; you must have the pattern to make the block.
