Hi friends!
I have been sharing about the different chapters in my new book, Patchwork Braids and today we are chatting about adding squares to a braid!
In previous posts I chatted about basic braids and using strips of varying sizes.
Arrowleaf Quilt
It is actually pretty easy to add squares to a braid! Let’s look at a couple of quilts and then I will give you the secret!
The first quilt is called Arrowleaf and I just love this little wall quilt!
The braids are made with fabrics from the Rainbow Spice collection by Sarah Thomas AKA Sarditty for Mdoa Fabrics. So fun!
The quilt has other blocks as well- flying geese units and the corner blocks that really give great movement to this little gem of a quilt!
Pink Delight
Another quilt in the book that uses squares is called Pink Delight! For this quilt I pulled fabrics from the Spotsy collection from QT Fabrics. My idea was that this would be basically a 2 color quilt- pink and white. I know pink is not always popular for quilts anymore, especially baby quilts (why? I don’t know as I love pink quilts!) but I went for it!
Of course, I expanded my pink palette to include purple and even a little red! Adding the deep blue squares really grounded all that pink and kept if from feeling too baby!
Then for fun, I tried the quilt again using my new batik line Just Dandy sticking with blues and greens. Love this version too!
Adding Squares to a Braid
So what’s the secret to adding squares to a braid?
I add all the squares to the braid pieces that will go on the left side of the braid. So then the squares are part of each piece as I sew my braids together!
Easy peasy!

happy quilting!
