Magazine Mania

June 20, 2018July 8, 2020 2 comments

Hi friends!

This week I want to share some of my recent work with you. A few years ago, I was doing a lot of work for magazines. And it was fun, but I then I decided to focus on my own patterns.

This year, I decided to submit a few ideas to magazines and see what happened.

And I had 3 quilts accepted into 3 different magazines! All very different.

The first quilt is on the cover of the July August 2018 Quiltmaker magazine.

This is a block I originally designed for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks magazine. Then when they were looking for quilts that had hidden block designs, I knew this one would be perfect. So I played around, tweaked it a bit and they said yes!

It is called Garden Gala and I used bright fun colors that made the dark, grey days of winter when I was piecing the quilt, seem brighter. The fabric are from the Hopscotch line by RJR.

It is a hidden block design because the stars are formed when 4 blocks are placed together.

Then next quilt was one where they were looking for Log Cabin quilts and I made mine with a modern touch. I used blocks that had logs of different sizes and added the logs in white to the center of the blocks.

The quilt is called Desert Bloom and it was in McCall’s Quilting July August 2018 magazine. I love the movement from the different size logs and the diagonal white mini logs.

I used fabrics from Alison Glass’s Sunprint 2018 line and kept the palette 2 toned.

The last quilt is quite different.  I may have already shared a picture of it with you on Instagram. It is called Mountain Joy and it might be my favorite of the 3 quilts. Partly because it is different. The quilt started as an exercise in transparency. I wanted to show triangles overlapping and use value changes to highlight the areas.

Then it became a bit about the mountains I could see out the window in my quilt studio and how, on a winter day, where there are clouds floating around, bits of the mountains can be obscured and leave a gap.

My good friend and long arm quilter extraordinaire, Crystal Zagnoli, quilted it for me with these straight lines highlighting the different areas.

Actually Crystal quilted all 3 of these quilts and she always makes me look good!

I like quilts with a story. Sometimes a quilt is just a quilt and other times, it has a story. Sometimes it has significance built into the parts.

Soon I will be sharing with you blocks from my new BOM quilt called Quilt Bee and I will share the meaning behind the blocks.

Do you have a quilt that has a story? Feel free to share in the comments. I would love to hear about them.

happy quilting,

Kate

p.s. In case you missed it, I will be teaching at the AQS show in Paducah this fall! I have never been to Paducah so this is exciting for me.
