Garden Memories: A Modern Floral Quilt Pattern

August 25, 2021September 22, 2021 Post a comment

Hi friends!

Today I want to talk about one of my floral quilt patterns, Garden Memories.

Floral Quilt Pattern

Many of my quilt patterns are designs based on squares, half square triangles, flying geese, rectangles… geometric shapes. In one my more recent patterns, I decided to use those shapes to create the image of a flower.

I wanted it to be a modern flower, just a pieced block that reminded one a flower. I called it Garden Memories.

The fabric line I used for these quilts, Painted Blossoms from Island Batik, was inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings. I had been to an exhibit at the Denver Museum of Van Gogh’s paintings a few years ago and wanted to use his garden paintings as the inspiration for the quilt.

Flowers

I love using paintings of nature and visits to nature- like my recent trip around the Denver Botanical Gardens as inspiration for quilts.

In this case, I decided to use a few of the fabrics to create 5 different colored flowers.

The HST units put together as FG reminded me of the rows of flowers as you traverse the garden paths.

It’s a fun little quilt! I even made the quilt in 2 different backgrounds. I do love a quilt with a light background. Using a light and a black background, I was able to show the garden during the day and at night. I love them both!

I called the light version of this floral quilt pattern Daylight and the dark version Nightfall.

And, you can use fat eights or FQs to make it easy to start your garden! Use the cute FQ stack that you have hanging around!

We went a little bold with the quilting on the darker quilt using a hot pink, variegated thread to quilt large flowers.

I hope you have been able to get out and enjoy nature around you- it can be so inspiring!

happy quilting!
